The Tech Companies Hiring The Most Right Now

This article is more than 10 years old.

Last month Forbes reported that software quality assurance engineer is the happiest job in America, according to the jobs site CareerBliss.com. If you’re looking to make the move to that profession, or any job in the tech industry, you'll want to know who is hiring.

Forbes and the job aggregator site Indeed.com teamed up to find the 25 technology companies that are hiring the most right now for jobs that pay $60,000 a year, or more. The picture we offer does not reflect a precise number of available jobs, since an opening can be listed in more than one place and can remain online for a time after it’s filled. Nevertheless, the numbers do offer a strong, broad gauge of which tech companies are expanding and taking on the most new workers.

Heading the list with 1,521 unique job postings: Microsoft. The Redmond, Wash.-based computer software and Internet firm is looking to take on software developers, network administrators, designers, and engineers, among other specialties.

Tech giant IBM and online retailer Amazon.com round out the top three with 1,348 and 1,329 job openings, respectively.

IBM is looking to fill IT specialist jobs, senior engineer positions, and software developer openings.

If you’re a control systems specialist, program developer or IT manager—you might have luck landing a job at Amazon. The Seattle-based firm is looking to hire these professionals right now, among many others.

Apple, Oracle and HP also made the list, with a total of 2,339 online job listings between the three. Other big tech firms doing heavy hiring: Cisco, Intel, Dell and Facebook.

Gayle Laakmann McDowell, author of The Google Résumé: How to Prepare for a Career and Land a Job at Apple, Microsoft, Google or Any Top Tech Company, has worked for numerous popular tech firms. In her book, McDowell offers advice to job seekers trying to get in at a top notch company.

“Start off at a start-up when you’re a student,” McDowell said. “It’s a great way to get tangible experience and gain credibility.”

Once you’re ready to move on and move up, you should prepare for a variety of question types in the interview. “Websites like CareerCup.com and Glassdoor.com will give you a good sense of the types of interview questions you might be asked,” she said. “But don’t stop at the technical or expertise questions. You can and should prepare for behavioral questions. Read through your resume and find ways of talking concisely and effectively about each of your accomplishments. Preparation for behavioral questions is one of the easiest ways to improve your overall performance.”

McDowell gives more pointers on how to land a job in her book, and she talks about what tech companies look for in candidates. “Passion. Creativity. Initiative. Intelligence. And a ‘getting things done’ attitude,” she writes. “[Tech firms] pride themselves on their funky and innovative culture, and they want people who will fit into this.”

So, if you think you’re a good fit for the laid-back environment that tech firms offer, you may want to check out job postings at the top tech companies hiring the most.
