Hipmunk Update Integrates Calendar for Easier Trip Planning

The latest Hipmunk update lets you see your appointments along with your flight or hotel search results.

Ever tried to book a flight on your smartphone or tablet and found that you had to keep switching back and forth between flight search results, your calendar, and maps? The process can be time-consuming and annoying, but now the free travel search engine Hipmunk is aiming to eliminate that frustration.

An update released Thursday for the Hipmunk for iPhone, iPad, and Android OS apps adds optional integration with your phone's calendar, so you can see your appointments along with your flight or hotel search results. The update lets you integrate Microsoft Outlook, Google Calendar, and Apple iCal events and meetings into mobile flight and hotel search results.

"With mobile calendar integration, we are immediately saving users from toggling between apps, calendars and search results — cutting out thousands of hours of agony," Adam Goldstein, Hipmunk CEO, said in a statement. "And we are thrilled to be the first travel company to allow this type of unique personalization."

With the update, any meetings that conflict with a flight are displayed on the screen. Meetings and other events are shown within the app's timeline of flight results. Even better, the location of these appointments will be plotted on a map alongside hotels. And on Android, a "no conflicts" button lets users hide flights that conflict with calendar appointments.

"Since business travelers are constantly on the move and glued to their phones, many of them are on the leading edge of mobile technology adaption," Goldstein said. "They've been asking for this feature on mobile and we're confident the integration will save them time while travel planning."
