Gravity Fleet sees the player beat back invading aliens using a combination of weaponry and gravity. Despite the occasional frustration the game is extremely enjoyable.

Things aren’t going well for the team in Gravity Fleet. Aliens are attacking and it’s down to the player to destroy them all and save the day. Each one of the eighty (ish) levels starts with the player’s space ship on the left side of the screen, and some aliens on the right.

At first glance some of the aliens look to be impossible to destroy, due to where they are positioned on screen. This is where gravity comes in. There will be planets dotted about the screen, and each one has its own gravitational pull.

Firing a weapon near a planet will see the gravity pull the projectile in a new direction. Using some careful aiming it’s possible to loop shots around into previously unreachable places. Of course, this has to be done without hitting the actual planet, which can be quite tricky.

This is where items come in. Some help the player see how the shot will be curved, while others show the size of the planet’s gravitational field. The player can also purchase assistants, who each come with a special ability such as more powerful missile strikes.

New style ships can also be bought. While not official, these ships bear more than a passing resemblence to favourites such as the Planet Express Ship from Futurama, and The Normandy from Mass Effect.

Throughout the course of the game new weapons become available. These range from missiles, to time delayed bombs, to alien-smashing laser beams that need careful aiming. The weapons are very satisfying to use.

The only small niggle I have is that sometimes the amount of fine-tuning needed to make a shot is nigh on impossible without using the assist items. Now, these items are cheap enough but if the player has just blown all of their cash on a new spaceship then they will be out of luck.

This aside, Gravity Fleet is still definitely worth playing. It’s an interesting idea backed up by powerful weapons and cool looking ships – what’s not to like?
