Apple Gains Share Amid Slowdown

This article is more than 10 years old.

Following a monthly look into the industry, Canaccord Genuity technology analyst Michael Walkley released his estimates for the first quarter of 2012 through to the first quarter of 2013.

Mr. Walkley said:  "Further, our checks indicated strong global share gains continue with the iPhone 4S selling well in international markets including Brazil, Russia, and China. While Android tablets were a primary focus at last year’s MWC, most Android OEMs offered tablets but focused meetings on new smartphone offerings. With the iPad 3 expected to be announced on March 7, we believe Apple (AAPL) will likely dominate tablet market share for the remainder of 2012."

Without major updates or new phones released and following a very strong holiday season, total global smartphone unit estimates went from 490.3 million in CQ4/11 to 137.7 million in CQ1/12, with all companies selling significantly fewer phones than last calendar quarter:

“One reason we anticipate global handset sales will decrease 17% sequentially during the March quarter is becausemany smartphone OEMs have delayed new product launches until Q2/2012 in an attempt to capture sales versus potentially slowing iPhone 4S sales and ahead of the potential iPhone 5 launch.”
