The panoramically-wide cover photo that sits atop your profile in Facebook’s new Timeline interface can be a tricky space to fill, given that it doesn’t conform to conventional photos. And while Facebook makes it easy for you use any old photo, you’ll need to pan the image around somewhat until it fits in the cover photo space.

If you’re looking for a bit more control over your cover photo, online image editor Aviary has just added a new feature to its Facebook app that lets you manually crop one of your photos to perfectly fit the cover photo dimensions.

You load up the app from within Facebook, choose one of your photos, select the “crop” tool, and then select “Cover Photo” from the list of predefined options. Size the crop area to your liking, then click Apply, then Save.

Says Aviary:

Now head back to your profile, hover over your Cover Photo and select “Change Cover”. Then select “Choose from Photos”, and it should be in both your “Recent Uploads” and the Aviary album we create for your edited photos.

If you’re a little more adept with standard image editing programs, the resolution of the cover photo is 851 pixels wide by 315 pixels tall.
