Nasdaq Web Site Shut Down By Denial Of Service Attacks

This article is more than 10 years old.

Every afternoon, I cruise on over to Nasdaq.com to check out the after-hours trading action, the better to bring you some end of the day blog posts.

But not today.

Alas, Nasdaq.com is down for the count at the moment, apparently felled by a distributed denial-of-service attack from a group of hackers possibly connected with Anonymous, the hacking collective.

As Reuters reports, Nasdaq has been been under steady attack for the last 24 hours or so, causing ongoing disruptions for people trying to use the site. Also hit: the BATS Exchange, which accounts for 11%-12% of daily U.S. stock trading activity, although that site seems fine at the moment.

Trading in Nasdaq stocks has not been affected by the attacks. The wire service reports that the attacks have also affected the NasdaqTrader.com site, although it seems to be fine at the moment. A notice on that site points out that Nasdaq is "investigating intermittent slowness on certain NASDAQ websites."

As  The Guardian notes, Credit for the Nasdaq attack is being claimed by a group called "Operation Digital Tornado by L0NGwave99."

The group said in a statement that "this DDoS Operation over NASDAQ is done in support of the great and rooted 99% movement, whom the L0NGwave99 Group has decided to give a present."
