The rumor mill is buzzing about the alleged impending arrival of the iPad 3. In fact, even though nobody seems to know exactly what the next iteration of Apple’s tablet will look like, or what features it will sport, we’ve already started receiving press releases for iPad 3 cases.
Alas, our weekly case roundups are for the present, not the future, so, while we look forward to the many cases and bags that will accompany the launch of the next iPad, let’s focus on what’s available today, for the iPads that are actually in our hands.
Ballistic: The Ballistic Tough Jacket Series (iPad 2; $70) is a case designed for serious protection, thanks to a three-layer construction that combines silicone, hard plastic, and a special polymer to both absorb shock and keep dents and scratches at bay. A convenient front cover can be removed and used as a stand to hold up the iPad while reading.
Flowfold: The Flowfold (iPad and iPad 2; $35 to $40) is a sleeve made of a special material that has several times the tensile strength of steel while featuring a very thin profile and extremely lightweight construction. The weather-resistant material is even vegan-friendly, with absolutely no animal products used in its fabrication. The case comes in five different patterns and styles.
Killspencer: The DoppFolio (iPad and iPad 2: $188) is, in the words of its manufacturer, a “bag designed to change shape.” You can use it as a rectangular box capable of accommodating bulky travel items, or flatten it, in which case it transforms into a sleeve capable of carrying your iPad or even a MacBook Air. It’s waterproof and available in black leather or Cognac Nubuck.
Y U No Sticker: These decals (iPad 2; $10 to $15) are not, strictly speaking, cases, but if you are a fan of the popular game Portal, you’ll appreciate the design of these vinyl stickers that add a touch of…inter-dimensional fun. They were designed by one of the game’s fans and are available at a very reasonable price.
Marware: The CEO Hybrid Contrast Stitching (iPad 2; $50) is a version of the company’s popular CEO Hybrid iPad case that features a special stitching that adds a splash of color. The Hybrid supports the iPad 2’s magnetic sleep/wake feature, and the case even includes a strap that allows you to carry your tablet securely in one hand. It’s available in red, pink, brown, or black.
