Valve’s Steam Mobile App Available as Beta

Steam Mobile App

Game maker and distributor Valve has released a new “companion app” for iOS called Steam Mobile. The app, available on the iTunes App Store, is currently available for download to all but limits use to accounts currently enrolled in the beta.

Once open to the public, the app will allow Steam users to access the Steam catalog to browse games and discounts, connect with their friends, and participate in Steam in-game chats. Purchases are limited to PC and Mac titles for use on a computer, so you won’t be using the app to purchase or play games on your iOS device, but for frequent users of the Steam platform the app promises to provide a seamless experience between desktop and mobile usage.

“The Steam app comes from many direct requests from our customers,” said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve in a statement announcing the app. “Seeing which of your friends are online and playing a game, sending quick messages, looking at screenshots for an upcoming game, or catching a sale - these are all features customers have requested. Mobile is changing way people interact, play games and consume media, and the Steam app is part of our commitment to meet customer demands and expand the service functionality of Steam to make it richer and more accessible for everyone.”

If users wish to join the beta, log-in once with the app using your Steam credentials and you’ll be added to the beta in order as the service ramps up.
