Facebook Messenger For Windows Goes After Google Chat

Windows 7-enabled PC users around the globe now have another chat feature, this time from Facebook. [1]

While its mobile versions have already been launched, the Facebook Messenger for Windows seems like a direct attack on Google’s longstanding GChat and GTalk.

With over 800 million users already, the Facebook Messenger already has the scale to enable further stickiness to the site.

User Engagement Should Increase, But More Features Needed

While the messenger feature is commonplace in smartphone platforms like Android and Apple iOS, engagement on PC’s can be higher as many users constantly have their Facebook pages open on their browser.

Facebook Messenger goes one step further and users can now be notified of their friend activity even if the facebook.com page is not open. It’s an intuitive move since a simple notification alert can prompt an otherwise irregular or one who is offline to open his or her Facebook page.

They may also stay on Facebook longer or just keep it open to be able to respond more quickly. For now, the Messenger is devoid of voice/video chat capabilities like GTalk, but these upgrades are on their way to fully counter Google.
