CES: Intel Unveils New Smartphone Reference Design

This article is more than 10 years old.

While Intel mostly talked about ultrabooks at its press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Monday, expect CEO Paul Otellini to spend a significant portion of his keynote address later today to focus on the company's push into the smartphone processor market.

In the company's booth on the show floor at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Intel is showing off a smartphone reference design running Android on a new chip called the Atom Z2460. The phone isn't intended to be an end-market product, but does go a long way toward showing handset makers the way on how to create a compelling smartphone using Intel processors rather than the usual ARM-based parts.

Also in the reference design: a 4-inch display, an 8 MP camera, high-def video playback, HDMI, accelerometer, 3D gyroscope, wifi, Bluetooth and NFC capability.

Here are two pictures of the phone; expect to hear more about Intel's plans in mobile later today.
