Each year in early January, geeks from far and wide descend on Las Vegas to see the latest in technology at the Consumer Electronics Show. And they've been doing it for some time.

The first CES (pictured at the bottom of this story) took place in New York City in June of 1967 with 250 exhibitors and 17,500 attendees—not bad for the 60s, which, looking back, were decidedly low-tech. This year at the show, which starts Tuesday, 140,000 attendees and 5,000 press members from 140 countries are expected.

What's more staggering: Over 2,700 exhibitors will we showing off their latest wares in more than 1.8 million square feet of exhibit space. According to the Consumer Electronics Association, the group that produces the show, CES is the world's biggest consumer technology show, and the largest trade show of any kind in the United States.

To say that the show is enormous and there's something to see around every single corner, is, well, completely accurate. With some companies like , the importance of the show , but historically, some groundbreaking technology has been unveiled at CES. At the 1970 show, for example, the VCR made its debut. The 1981 CES brought the first compact disc player. In 1998, we got our first HDTV, and in 2001, the first Xbox was shown off at a CES press conference. You get the idea.

So what will be the big thing this year? Will there even be a big thing? No one knows for sure what will steal the spotlight in Sin City, though we do . Whatever it is, we'll be there taking scores of pictures, along with lots of shots the most interesting sights on the show floor.

Monday, January 9th is CES press conference day, and the floor officially opens on Tuesday, so check back on the gallery above often to get a glimpse of the best stuff we're seeing at CES.
