Acer Challenges Apple's iCloud with "AcerCloud"

Two days before the official start of CES, Acer held a press conference in Las Vegas where it announced its AcerCloud service to connect Acer PCs to Android devices and other PCs via the net.

The service includes a photo sync for Android phones (no iOS support). Take a picture with a phone and it’s automatically synced to an Acer PC, similar to the way Apple’s iCloud syncs photos between iOS devices and Macs and PCs.

Although the demo didn’t work (which is common with WiFi dependent demos at trade shows), Acer’s John Princen tried to show off the ability to play a music file from an Android phone and listen to it on an Acer PC. In theory, the PC will be awakened from sleep and start playing media immediately – at least that’s how it worked “in rehearsal,” said Princen.

Acer also introduced the Aspire A5 which it is billing as the “world’s thinnest 15-inch Ultrabook.” It weighs less than 3 pounds and, said the company, it starts up in less than 2 seconds.
