Microsoft claims nothing has changed in regards to Windows Phone update process

Oops. Yesterday we told you that Microsoft was altering the way it administers updates to Windows Phone, no longer forcing carriers to acquiesce to an update if they didn’t feel it was in their customers’ best interests (as if that would ever be the case).

Turns out it was just a false alarm. According to a Microsoft spokesperson, the blog post was taken out of context. “Nothing has changed in regard to how we work with carriers to deliver Windows Phone updates to our customers,” said Greg Sullivan to ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley. If a carrier chooses not to push a particular update to its customers, it will be bundled into the next big update. So, if the disappearing keyboard bug fix isn’t pushed to Rogers, Telus and Bell customers this go-round, it’s because it will be bundled into the next major Windows Phone release, likely Tango, in the first half of this year.

That being said, it’s still concerning to see how much influence the carriers have over the various operating system updates on which we rely so dearly. In this age of disjointed Android updates, Windows Phone was seen as the relief. Instead, it’s Apple that emerges victorious in their update process, which is completely carrier-independent.
