New Year's tech resolutions for 2012

Updated

What are your technological resolutions for the new year?

Some people decide to give up smoking in the new year. Others decide to get into shape, or at least lose a little weight. But New Year's Eve is also a good time to make some tech resolutions and here are a few you might consider;

Backup everything

It takes a major tech disaster for most people to learn their lesson and put a decent backup regime in place. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Consider a practical and economic combination of onsite and offsite backup, perhaps combining USB devices, DVD-Rs, network attached storage and online storage services. Automate your backups wherever possible.

Consolidate gadgets and services

Are you carrying around more gadgets than you need? Are you paying for several mobile broadband services when you could just share one? Are your files spread across various online storage sites when they could be consolidated? The new year is a good time to take stock of what you’re paying for, what you’ve got access to and what you really need.

Lighten your load

Are you lugging around a hefty notebook when a netbook or ultrabook could do the job? Would a tablet make more sense, perhaps with an external keyboard? Is your smartphone capable of handling the tasks at hand? It’s worth tipping everything out of your travel bag to see what you really need to carry around in 2012.
