Skype Offering Free Holiday Wi-Fi at Major Airports

Skype on Monday announced that it's offering free Wi-fi to travelers in more than 50 U.S. airports from Dec. 21-27.

If you happen to be stuck in an airport over the holidays, Skype is making things a little more enjoyable. The company on Monday announced that it's offering a free hour of Internet access via third-party wireless hotspots within the Skype footprint at more than 50 U.S. airports.

"The holidays are all about connecting with those that you love," Linda Summers, Skype's director of product marketing, said in a statement. "Skype is helping people maintain these meaningful connections this holiday season from wherever they may be. A voice or video call via Skype when you can't be together for the holidays is the next best thing to being there."

The offer is good from Dec. 21-27, and it lets you make voice and video calls to computers for free and to landlines and mobile phones using Skype credit. It works on PCs, Macs, and iOS devices. You must have the latest version of Skype to take advantage of the freebie.

Free Wi-Fi is available at most major U.S. airports, including JFK and LaGuardia in New York, San Francisco International, Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta, and O'Hare and Midway in Chicago. For the full list, see Skype's announcement.

If you use Skype Wi-Fi at an airport this season, Skype wants you to tweet about it under then #freeskypewifi hashtag.

Skype and Facebook last month that allows for Facebook-to-Facebook calls from within Skype. The features come with the new Skype 5.4 Beta for Mac and Skype 5.7 Beta for Windows updates. To access it, you must connect your Skype and Facebook accounts via the Facebook button in the Skype dashboard. Your friends list will appear in Skype and you can make a call, which your friend can answer from Facebook.
