Ad Calls Galaxy Tab the “Tablet Apple Tried to Stop”

Following a court ruling overturning an Australian injunction blocking the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the country, Samsung has begun advertising its tablet and is calling it “the tablet Apple tried to stop.” Apple previously managed to block the sale of the Galaxy tab 10.1 in Australia over patent infringement claims.

In an ad that ran in Australia’s Sun-Herald news paper, Samsung showed off the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and included a tag line saying Apple tried to stop the company from selling the tablet, clearly trying to play off the fact that it was — at least temporarily — blocked from selling the tablet in the country.

Samsung’s vice president of telecommunications, Tyler McGee, put a positive spin on the injunction, as well. “At the end of the day the media awareness certainly made the Galaxy Tab 10.1 a household name compared to probably what it would’ve been based on the investment that we would’ve put into it from a marketing perspective,” he said.

Apple and Samsung have been fighting in court over patent infringement claims for several months with both companies alleging that the other’s mobile devices use patented technologies without proper licensing. They have filed lawsuits against each other in the U.S. and other countries.

A German court issued an injunction blocking the sale of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in the country, and the company lost an appeal to overturning that ruling. Apple was also awarded a temporary injunction through a Dutch court blocking the sale of some Galaxy devices in the European Union.

Samsung isn’t saying how much money it estimates it lost by not being able to sell the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia for several weeks. With its new spin on the injunction, it looks like the company is trying to make up for lost time.
