Microsoft has announced the popular email client will soon receive a "Dark Mode" that will allow users to use the application in a colour combination that is much easier on the eyes.

The company confirmed the addition after a user commented that Dark Mode was a "necessary feature".

A representative for Outlook replied to the post and insisted Microsoft had been working on the feature "for a few months".

They said: "Thanks for your continual support of Outlook Web.

"We’ve actually been working on Dark Mode for a few months now and you can expect this in the product soon."

The representative for Outlook explained last year's Halloween theme for the email client was actually a "sneak preview" of the new mode.

They went on: "One reason for the delay is our insistence that we deliver the best Dark Mode of any leading email client (you’ll understand when you see it, I guarantee).

"The sneak preview you saw last year at Halloween was a prototype that required a lot more work to be ready for prime time.

"We’ve redesigned the colours and code multiple times and are proud to enter the final stretch."

In preparation for Halloween last year, Outlook put together a theme for the mail client.

In the build up to the spooky holiday users were given a prompt at the top of their client asking if they wanted to browse emails "with the lights turned off".

The theme turned the entire client dark and decorated it with a holiday theme.

Ghosts, bats and dead trees filled the Outlook screen.

Although no official release date was confirmed, the Outlook representative stated they were "elated" to announce the feature would come "very soon".
