iOS 11.4 Jailbreak Status Update: What You Need To Know

We know what you’re thinking: we’re still waiting for the iOS 11.3.1 jailbreak to actually become a reality, so why are we even thinking about iOS 11.4?

Well, it doesn’t do anyone any favors to stagnate, which means we need to be positive and look to the future. Besides, there has been enough activity to imagine that an iOS 11.4 jailbreak is actually a tangible expectation.

There hasn’t really been anyone in the community who has put their head above the parapet and unequivocally state that they will work on a public iOS 11.4 jailbreak and take it to completion. However, it’s evident that there have been important events taking place in the community in the recent past which would suggest that people are seriously looking into the possibility of liberating iOS 11.4 from Apple’s walled-garden. The outcome of these events still remains to be seen but there is definitely some positivity growing.

For those of you who don’t already know, it’s been confirmed that the iOS 11.4 Secure Enclave Processor (SEP) is compatible with iOS 11.3.1. That immediately means that iOS 11.4 has at least some similarities with iOS 11.3.1, the firmware which is no longer being signed by Apple now.

We also know that iOS 11.4 can actually be jailbroken: Richard Zhu, a security researcher, and former Pwn2Own champion, has already demonstrated Cydia working on an iOS 11.4 device. Whether that actually turns into anything which can be released to public is another story.

Additionally, the relatively well-known 360 Vulcan Team also took the opportunity during this year’s MOSEC 2018 in Shanghai to demonstrate a remote jailbreak compatible with both iOS 11.4 and iOS 12 beta.

That is effectively two different teams/individuals who have found a way to brute force their way through Apple’s security in order to get the root read/write access that they need to put a jailbreak together. It’s great news that we know this is possible but the pickle is really whether or not either of these individuals/teams will take the leap and release something into the community. While the aforementioned individuals or teams may not release their iOS 11.4 jailbreak to public, at least they have showed that the firmware is very much vulnerable to it and it is only a matter of time before someone brings a similar solution for everyone.

Until then, whatever the landscape shows, and whatever the future holds for iOS 11.4, we are fairly sure that at least iOS 11.3.1 Electra jailbreak is very much on the immediate horizon for those who are patient enough to still be on iOS 11.3.1 waiting for jailbreak to arrive.
