Microsoft's USB Type-C Surface dongle reportedly coming this week

When Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop last year - and then the 2017 Surface Pro a few weeks later - fans were dismayed to find that the company decided to forgo the more modern USB Type-C port which has been found on most high-end devices.

To help alleviate the backlash, Microsoft promised it would release a dongle that would add the port to the device before the year was out, but it wasn't until March of this year that the company shared anything else about the device when it promised it would be out in 2018.

The Verge now reports that the launch of the said dongle is imminent, with a Microsoft spokesperson stating that the company plans to make it available later this week, on June 29, to business and commercial customers. While this means you probably won't be seeing the device at most retailers, it's likely that anyone will be able to buy the product online through the Microsoft Store, similarly to what happened with the Surface Pro with LTE late last year.

The USB Type-C dongle will connect to a Surface device through the Surface connector, used for charging, and users will be able to use the Type-C port for charging as well as for connecting external devices. The dongle is expected to cost $79.99, a hefty price tag for a device that seemingly includes just one USB Type-C port.
