Dell Products Used 73 Million Pounds of Recycled Materials

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A recently released report by Dell Inc. states that a total of 73 million pounds of recycled materials has been used in manufacturing new products over the past five years. The company plans to use more than 50 million pounds of recycled-content plastics in its products by 2020.

According to the ‘2020 Legacy of Good’ report, the company currently uses recycled-content plastic from various sources such as bottles and CD cases in creation of plastic housing of desktops and backing of monitors. This has led to diversion of more than 7.8 million pounds of plastic being diverted from landfills in 2012 alone. Dell aims to use content from recycled electronics as well as bio-based plastics to manufacture new products. Owing to huge increase in demand for post-consumer recycled plastics, consistent supply continues to be a huge concern, Dell noted.

The company has delivered significant reduction to environmental impacts by making its packaging recyclable or compostable. In its journey to waste-free packaging, the company has developed innovative packaging solutions that make use of an array of materials including bamboo and mushroom. Currently, nearly three-fourth of Dell’s desktops and laptops packaging are recyclable or compostable.

Through its packaging innovation model, Dell plans to utilize open innovation to discover new materials and bring them into use. The efforts will focus on finding alternatives to non-recyclable and non-compostable materials such as expanded polyethylene (EPE) cushions and plastic bags. In addition, it also plans to expand the use of materials such as wheat straw, molded paper pulp and mushroom-based cushioning. Dell has been successful in eliminating environmentally harmful materials from many of its products over the past decade, the report reminded.
