Intel has already been in the news today after having announced its limited edition Core i7-8086K CPU along with its Amber Lake and Whiskey Lake lineup of processors. Of particular note was that the 8086K was also the first CPU to be clocked at 5GHz. Now, it appears that there's another 5GHz CPU in the works but this one is quite a beast under the covers.
In an announcement held at Computex 2018, Intel Senior Vice President of client computing Gregory Bryant took the opportunity to make an early reveal of a yet unnamed CPU boasting a whopping 28 cores running at 5GHz. In fact, the single-socket solution managed to make rather short work of the Cinebench R15 benchmark in a matter of seconds, posting a rather blistering multi-core result of 7,334, well ahead of both the Threadripper 1950X and i9-7980XE which generally post respective results of 3,000 and 3,500 at stock speeds. Other information regarding architecture and process was not covered.
While pricing was not mentioned, it's probably safe to say that it's not going to be a bargain buy, even with AMD chipping away with its Ryzen and Threadripper CPU lineups. With Intel's i9-7980XE 18 core processor attracting a $1,999 price tag, it may not be surprising to see the 28 core monster hit the market for a thousand dollars more. Bryant also eluded that the processor could make an appearance before the end of this year.
