Windows 10 has managed to increase its market share last month, according to data provided by StatCounter, while its current biggest rival, Windows 7, declined during the same period.

Specifically, Windows 10 managed to increase its share from 43.53% in February to 43.95% last month, while Windows 7, dropped from 41.59% to 41.51%.

All the other Windows versions are far behind, and Windows 8.1 is currently third in the charts with only 7.99% for the month of March.

Adoption of Windows 10 is expected to improve even more by the summer thanks to the release of the Spring Creators Update, whose rollout is projected to begin this month. Despite an announcement from Microsoft is not yet available, people with knowledge of the matter said the Spring Creators Update release should kick off on April 10.

Windows 10 adoption

Windows 10, however, is growing at a pace that’s believed to be way below the original forecasts. Microsoft planned to bring Windows 10 on 1 billion devices by the end of FY2018, but the company later admitted that reaching this goal wouldn’t be possible given the early adoption rates.

More recently, outgoing Windows chief Terry Myerson revealed that Windows 10 had 700 million users, while statistics provided by Microsoft itself indicated the operating system was running on 600 million devices.

On the other hand, a bigger concern for Microsoft could be killing off Windows 7, which is projected to reach end of support in January 2020. And by the looks of things, despite the approach end of life, many home users and enterprises are yet to begin the transition to Windows 10.

The same thing happened in 2014 when Microsoft finally retired Windows XP and users refused to upgrade, instead sticking with an unsupported Windows version and living with the risk of having their data exposed at any point due to vulnerabilities that remained unpatched.
