8-core versus 10-core iMac Pro:
The Final Conflict

March 7th, 2018, by rob-ART morgan, mad scientist
March 21st - Added Logic Pro X result
March 26th - Updated After Effects with CC 2018 results

With the help of some remote mad scientists, we were able to collect more 10-core iMac Pro CPU intensive benchmarks to compare with our 8-core iMac Pro -- both with the same Pro Vega 64 GPU.

GRAPH LEGEND
iMac Pro 10-core - 2017 iMac Pro 3.0GHz 10-Core Xeon W-2150B CPU, 64GB of 2666MHz DDR4 ECC SDRAM, AMD Radeon Pro Vega 64 (16GB) GPU
iMac Pro 8-core - 2017 iMac Pro 3.2GHz 8-Core Xeon W-2140B CPU, 32GB of 2666MHz DDR4 ECC SDRAM, AMD Radeon Pro Vega 64 (16GB) GPU
iMac 5K 4-core - 2017 iMac 5K 4.2GHz Quad Core i7 (7700K), 64GB of 2400MHz DDR4 SO-DIMM, AMD Radeon Pro 580 (8GB) GPU

Blender - Render BMW Scene using CPU only
Using the BMW Benchmark Demo scene, we render using all CPU cores. (LOWER Time in Seconds = FASTER)

Blender - Render Barcelona Pavillion Scene using CPU only
Using the Barcelona Pavillion Demo scene, we render using all CPU cores. (LOWER Time in Seconds = FASTER)

After Effects CC - Render Project
We render the TestComp benchmark project. (LOWER Time in Seconds = FASTER)

Premiere Pro CC - Export Project
We export the PPBM6 sample project as Blu-ray. (LOWER Time in Seconds = FASTER)

Premiere Pro CC - Render Blur
A special project designed to test how fast it can render a blur effect. (LOWER Time in Seconds = FASTER)

Photoshop CC - Noise Reduction
Using the sample image courtesy of Mac Performance Guide, we apply the Noise Reduction Filter using maximum settings. (LOWER Time in Seconds = FASTER)

Final Cut Pro X - Export
The BruceX project is exported to ProRes 4444 XQ Master.
(LOWER Time in Seconds = FASTER)

Compressor - Transcode to 4K HEVC 10-bit (H.265)
From FCPX, we sent BruceX 5K project to Compressor and specified Apple Devices 4K (HEVC 10-bit) Output.
(LOWER Time in Seconds = FASTER)

Logic Pro X - Max Tracks Test
Using the Evan Logic Multicore Bencmark Test project, we kept adding tracks until we got the "System Overload" popup screen.
(Higher Number of Tracks = FASTER)

Geekbench 4 Multi-Core CPU Test
Each CPU workload models a real-world task or application, ensuring meaningful results. These tests are complex, avoiding simple problems with straightforward memory-access patterns, and push the limits of your system.
(HIGHER Score = FASTER)

Cinebench Multi-Core CPU test
Fascinating to watch as each core (real and virtual) rendering its part of the 3D model.
(HIGHER Score = FASTER)

WHAT DID WE LEARN?
The advantage of the 10-core iMac Pro ranged from 3% to 102%. Equally configured, the cost premium of the 10-core varies from 11% to 14%.

Compared to the fastest 2017 iMac 5K, the 8-core iMac Pro was 23% to 79% faster.
