Brian Krzanich, Intel CEO, speaks at the Intel Keynote address at CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S. January 8, 2018.

As per the reports, the tech giant Intel is working on their next generation pair of Artificial Intelligence-based VR glasses which are codenamed as “Superlite”. They are expected to be launched later in this year and would possibly be a part of the new hardware venture called “Vault” – adds Bloomberg.

Intel is likely to sell their augmented reality business with total assets of around $ 350 million and would be an investment based aid for the company interested in sales and design expertise too!

The next generation glasses would be able to communicate with a smart phone with the help of Bluetooth connectivity. The technology-focused, revolutionary “Superlite” will be taking the help of a laser-based projector to reflect light off the lens onto the wearer’s retina to display contextual information.Another plus point will be: it would be able to take advantage of the smartphone’s processing power and internet connectivity!

Though this is not the first time the company is experimenting with augmented reality. Earlier in June of 2015, the company bought a firm called Recon, a manufacturer of sport and enterprise-focused smart glasses which was shut down in the month of October last year. Talking about its design, it was a bit outdated; less fashionable but on a good note they promised timely contextual information and relevant data. Some of the employees working for the closed unit are still working in the “Vault” venture, designing design and features for the new platform based glasses.

Bloomberg’s report also covered Project Alloy, a much talked about ambitious “merged reality headset” that was ultimately removed from the service when Microsoft started pushing its Windows Mixed Reality platform.

The whole concept of consumer-oriented smart glasses isn’t a new idea. Google Glass was once an absolute failure and was placed at lower ranks in the enterprise market. Also, reports have mentioned about the Alexa powered smart glasses a talkative help from the house of Amazon and also there are rumors of premium segment AR glasses to be launched in the market by the iPhone makers, Apple. Apart from that, a list of smaller startups — Vuzix, Rokid, and ThirdEye are trying their luck to fill the void at CES and other trade shows with their developing technologies. However, most of their products are bulky, expensive, and lacking in software.

So, with this news Intel joins the list of much-renowned tech giants trying their hands in AR glasses segment. Let’s see what they have got for all of us!
