iPhone X Availability Crosses 50% For The First Time

Following
This article is more than 6 years old.

I have been monitoring 43 Apple stores in the Dallas, Minneapolis, New York City and Palo Alto areas for the past eight days to get a reading on the iPhone X’s availability. By entering these cities zip codes, it shows the in-store availability at surrounding stores and provides 688 data points which are comprised of the various carrier, color and memory size configurations. By checking in the morning and evenings, you can see the ebb and flow of X’s in a store’s inventory (but not how many). Last weekend, almost half of the various versions were available but it fell to 20% on Tuesday evening. They crossed 50% to 52% on Thursday night, so it will be interesting to see if it maintains this level during the weekend when sales should be strong. (Note that I own Apple shares and have sold Put options).

Apple’s financial results and, to a large degree, its stock price is dependent on how well iPhones sell. While investors only get an official read when the company announces it quarterly results, following data such as lead-times and market share data from third-party firms gives an indication on how they are doing. It was interesting to see on Thursday that Apple’s shares outperformed the overall market without too much Apple-specific news that would explain its strength. Apple’s stock fell 0.03% while the Dow 30 was down 0.31%, the S&P 500 fell 0.41% and the NASDAQ decreased 0.28%.

Information on the various versions

  • The Silver versions with 64GB of memory has the lowest availability at 44%
  • The Space Gray with 256GB of memory has the best availability at 63%
  • Sprint versions only have 30% availability in the stores
  • AT&T versions are at 71%

While in-store availability has increased, it may be better to order one on Apple’s website. If you want to pick it up at a store, you can order an X on Apple’s website and have it held for you (as long as the specific version you want shows it is in stock).

History of iPhone X availability on Apple’s website

It is a bit interesting to see the lead-times for the X on Apple’s U.S. website move back and forth a bit. On the company’s Canada and China sites, the X’s lead-times are down to one day or in stock, respectively, while Germany and Great Britain are at four to six days.
