One of the iOS 11 features you may not know about is that Apple now offers indoor mapping support for a growing number of international airports and malls.

While the number of airports and malls covered is still relatively small — with 34 airports, mostly based in the U.S., and a handful of shopping malls — Apple has published a list of where these are located.

Malls which offer indoor maps

Apple also revealed nine cities which offer indoor maps for malls. These include Baltimore, MD; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Los Angeles, CA; New York, NY; Philadelphia, PA; San Francisco, CA; San Jose, CA; and Washington, DC. Unlike the list of airports, it seems that Apple’s not yet rolled this feature out outside of the U.S.

Somewhat irritatingly, Apple also doesn’t reveal exactly which malls in these areas offer indoor mapping — instead limiting it to the cites themselves.

The usefulness of indoor mapping

While the feature only rolled out with iOS 11, Apple has been interested in indoor mapping for a while. Its early patents date back to 2014, just a couple of years after Apple Maps’ ill-fated debut. To make the indoor mapping more accurate, Apple’s patent described how it would utilize iBeacons, Apple’s Bluetooth Low Energy emitters designed to make its iDevices location aware indoors.

In the case of an airport, the indoor mapping means you can easily find restaurants, shops, boarding gates, check-in areas, and more, using your regular Apple Maps app. For shopping malls, it shows the location of individual stores, complete with handy information such as opening times.
