Apple's Black Friday deals: Not a lot of discounts, plenty of gift cards

Apple Orchard Road store in Singapore

Looking for a Black Friday deal on Apple gear? Your best bet may not be the Apple Store.

On Friday morning Apple revealed its 2017 Black Friday deals, offering up to $150 in gift cards with the purchase of select new iPhones, iPads, first-generation Apple Watches and Macs.

As expected, the iPhone-maker did not go big with upfront savings and discounts and did not include many of its latest products, including the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X, its AirPods earbuds, Beats line of headphones and speakers or the most recent version of the Apple Watch, known as Series 3.

It was offering gift cards with some purchases: customers buying an iPhone SE, 6S and 7 will receive up to $50 gift cards, iPads will get up to $100, and Macs will get up to $150. The Apple Watch Series 1 purchases will come with a $25 gift card.

Although Apple's official deals may be modest, those looking to save on Apple's gear do have options.

If you're a student, or shopping for a student, and are looking to save money, the company's Education Store offers modest savings on Macs and iPads. The best part: They offer these discounts all year round.

There also are plenty of deals from other retail stores on Apple gear. Looking for the latest iPhones? You can find savings of up to $300 in the form of a gift card from Walmart when you buy one there.

Best Buy, Walmart and Target are offering the latest 32GB WiFi iPad for $249.99 (usually $329.99), and Best Buy and Target are also offering nice discounts on iPad Pros ($120-$125 off the 10.5-inch WiFi Pro).

All three of the major retailers are also offering savings on a variety of Beats headphones as well.
