2018 iPad Pro Lineup Could Feature TrueDepth Cameras, Face ID
The 2018 iPad Pro lineup could include one of the iPhone X’s biggest new feature, a TrueDepth Camera. In doing so, the new tablets would support Face ID, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via MacRumors).
In a Monday note to investors, the analyst explains TrueDepth Cameras will only be added to iPad Pros in 2018. At the same time, however, the new camera technology will be included on all 2018 iPhone models.
We predict iOS devices to be equipped with TrueDepth Camera in 2018F will include iPhone X and 2018 new iPhone and iPad models. Because of this, we believe more developers will pay attention to TrueDepth Camera/ facial recognition related applications. We expect Apple’s (US) major promotion of facial recognition related applications will encourage the Android camp to also dedicate more resources to developing hardware and facial recognition applications.
The iPhone X, which launches on Nov. 3, is the first Apple handset to ditch Touch ID. Instead, users will use Face ID facial recognition to authenticate and make Apple Pay purchases.
Just last week, Kuo said the new TrueDepth Camera technology would give Apple a big lead over Android for at least 2 1/2 years. This lead comes with a short-term disadvantage. The 3-D sensors for the technology have been difficult to produce. Because of this, most expect iPhone X demand to far exceed supply when the handset goes on sale on Friday, Oct. 27.
