Apple iOS 11.0.2 Starts Causing Problems

This article is more than 6 years old.

Apple iOS 11 brought problems, iOS 11.0.1 added to them in my iOS 11.0.2 Upgrade Guide yesterday I warned users against upgrading to it as well (except in special circumstances). This is why…

Just like its two predecessors, iOS 11.0.2 is facing the wrath of users across the likes of reddit and Twitter, including many responses aimed directly at the official @applesupport account.

Apple

While the problems are wide ranging, there is a consistent theme emerging: poor performance and heavily degraded battery life which is compounding the hits affected users have already suffered in iOS 11 and iOS 11.0.1. Some users are also pointing out that reverting to iOS 10.3.3 solved their problems, confirming it is the software which is to blame.

Here are some examples:

“@AppleSupport @tim_cook @cue @pschiller iOS 11.0.2 is a disaster. My phone has basically xxxx itself. Please stop releasing faulty updates.” - source

“@AppleSupport @Apple I updated to 11.0.2 and my phone is still getting frozen. What are you guys doing over there??” - source

“What the hell is going on with my phone! Constantly freezing and switching off since I updated to Ios 11.0.2 needs fixing fast” - source

“I'd argue that iOS 11.0.2 is even worse on battery life. @Apple @AppleSupport - source

“Crazy battery life for 11.0.2!!! Hello @AppleSupport !” - source

“New update iOS 11.0.2 Is not fixing the problems of battery life it is drain very fast” - source

“@Apple @AppleSupport #iphone #ios wtf cant get update right ios 11.0.2 drains battery even on charge.. u guys need 2 get ur xxxx together” - source

Wandera

“@AppleSupport iOS 11.0.2 drains the battery on 6S completely! Listened to one VM..drained from 91% to 78% instantly. Please fix” - source

“I just want a decent battery life again.” - source

“FIX THE BATTERY LIFE” - source

“@AppleSupport Just updated to iOS 11.0.2 and the phone gets really hot... and battery life is horrendous on a 7 Plus…” - source

“@AppleSupport @Apple ur new update 11.0.2 is draining battery like hell pls fix this asap” - source

“I actually downgraded to iOS 10.3.3 and haven't looked back. My SE feels like my old phone again. Not touching iOS 11 until all bugs are ironed out. My SE was practically unusable. (Tried restore, setup as new etc).” - source

“I went back to iOS 10.3.3.... Damnnn now I feel like I have a new phone... didn't realise I was missing this much speed. On iPhone 7+, feels so goood :)” - source

It is worth noting those who did downgrade and solve their problems are lucky, because today Apple stopped signing iOS 10.3.3 and iOS 11 meaning there is no longer a way for users on iOS 11.0.1 or iOS 11.0.2 to go back.

Apple

Despite this it is important to keep a sense of perspective. The number of iOS 11 compatible iPhones, iPads and iPod touch run into the hundreds of millions making it very hard to just the scale of any problem. That said I will be working to bring a greater sense of scale to these issues over the next week, so stay tuned.

It is also worth pointing out there is some good news in iOS 11.0.2: if you suffer from the iOS 11 bugs which caused the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus speakers to crackle, photos to be hidden or attachments to encrypted emails to break, iOS 11.0.2 is designed to fix them and reports are here it is largely successful (despite the odd exception). So if you suffer from one of these bugs, it could be worth the risk of upgrading.

But for most users upgrading to iOS 11.0.2 is not worth it. It brings no new security updates and a potentially crippling problems. Furthermore at this rate I would expect Apple to release iOS 11.0.3 soon (and we have already had three iOS 11 releases in two weeks). Meanwhile Apple is already beta testing iOS 11.1, so the rate of releases is unlikely to slow down anytime soon.

What might slow down, however, is the readiness of iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users to blindly hit the Update button if iOS 11 updates don’t improve. Over to you Apple...
