Microsoft Ships Possible RTM Build of Fall Creators Update

Microsoft Ships Possible RTM Build of Fall Creators Update

Microsoft doesn’t like to use terms like Release Candidate (RC) or Release to Manufacturing (RTM) anymore. But it appears that the RTM build of Windows 10 version 1709—aka the Fall Creators Update—has just shipped to Windows Insiders on the Fast Ring.

I write “appears” there because Microsoft isn’t saying: There’s no blog post, no word from Microsoft that I can find. But if you accept the fact that the original build 16299 release of Windows 10 is, in fact, the Release Candidate, then last night’s minor update to build 16299.15 is almost certainly RTM.

You know. Probably. Maybe.

Corroborating evidence: Microsoft pushed the original build 16299 release to the Slow ring too.

More evidence: The desktop watermark is gone after making a return in the previous two Insider builds to the Fast ring.

Another possible scenario: That we will see further point releases to 16299 in the build-up to the public release on October 17, which is now exactly two weeks away. As a reminder, the Creators Update had several such updates between “RTM” and “GA” (general availability).

Which is, of course, another term Microsoft hates to use now.

But no matter. Windows 10 version 1709—the Fall Creators Update—is basically done.

I think.

I'd like to have seen better integration between the People icon tray button and third-party providers before RTM, but maybe that's coming.

I think MS might have to start admitting something they don't want to admit about Skype and the consumer messaging war, but they just killed Groove. One step at a time.

In reply to BrandonMills:

On the positive side, they own LinkedIn. Their position really should be, "We are Facebook for Businesses.". Use that carrot to lure in Facebook and Twitter support, while offering LinkedIn integration in return for them. Honestly, MS should be pouring its efforts into LinkedIn, and shore them up as the definitive, unquestionable place for business social networking.

What happened to the advanced options for Windows Update?

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced Options link. In the prior build, you could choose the "channel" and deferral periods, but now that's gone on my Insiders VM, which is running Enterprise Edition. Gone on anyone else's too? (Maybe it can only be managed through Group Policy now.)

Is it just me or did Files on Demand disappear from OneDrive in this build?

I think the give-a-way is on the Leave Insiders page. Last Item is quit as opposed to hold off till next official build.

So, seeing as this is Version 1709 or Fall Creator Update, has the magic window opened and how long will stay open it before the Fast Ring gets switched over to rs_prerelease?

In NASCAR terms you probably ought to be displaying a white flag (one to go) rather than the checker. My own two cents: 16299 is the final "base" release for the FCU. The ".15" is more like the stability updates we see on patch Tuesdays. Just like on the Creators update the "base" is 15063, and they have been releasing stability updates right along (they are currently at ".608"). So they are definitely in the home stretch, but we'll probably see a "dot" release or two before October 17.

Ha! This is the mysterious, ambiguous, and awkward time period that Paul refers to! It's Insider until suddenly it isn't…..

So now that its actually coming out in October and not September shouldn't it be the 1710 release?

I will only install this joke in a virtual machine. Enough with the useless updates. I'm sticking with the Anniversary update until there's no security updates.

Civilization 6 has been giving me a green screen constantly until this build. That's a huge improvement for me.
