Microsoft will open its first European store in London's lucrative Oxford Circus shopping district, according to new reports.

Rumours suggest the firm is in advanced talks with The Crown Estate - the commercial business that controls holdings belonging to the royal family.

Microsoft will reportedly move into 255-259 Regent Street, less than 75 metres (243 feet) from Apple's leading UK store, located on the same road.

THE SURFACE REVEAL 

Sources close to Microsoft recently revealed it will announce 'at least one' new Surface device at the firm's annual Future Decoded event next month.

Future Decoded, which will run from October 31 until November 1, will see top Microsoft bosses discuss technology and software for use in digital business.

Microsoft typically releases new Surface devices in October.

Retail Week reports that talks for a 10-year lease are 'very advanced' and could be concluded 'in the coming weeks'.

But the deal, which would see Microsoft move into the unit currently occupied by United Colours of Benetton, is not final, and could still fall through.

Should the deal go through, the store would be Microsoft's first in Europe, adding to 106 US stores, 8 Canadian outlets and one in both Australia and Puerto Rico.

Speaking on the rumours, a spokesperson told MailOnline: 'Microsoft does not comment on rumour or speculation.' 

Earlier this month, rumours claimed the firm will announce a new Surface device at a keynote speech in London in October.

The software giant confirmed on September 6 that devices executive Panos Panay will speak at the firm's upcoming annual Future Decoded event in the capital.

Microsoft typically launches Surface devices in October, and sources close to the firm revealed the company plans to reveal 'at least one' new gadget at the event.

Future Decoded, which will run from October 31 until November 1, will see top Microsoft bosses discuss technology and software for use in digital business, the Verge reported.

Microsoft has previously promised to release one of its 2-in-1 'Surface Pro' tablets with 4G capabilities.

The company is expected to unveil this hardware at the event.

It could also announce an update to its Surface Hub digital whiteboard range.
