Xbox One X - Microsoft teases forward compatibility

The Xbox One X release date is just around the corner, with pre-orders selling out quick for the hugely powerful new Microsoft console.

Argos yesterday launched a limited amount of new Xbox One X pre-orders after selling out of their first batch within two days.

The Xbox One X has been dubbed the world’s most powerful console, and will cost £449.99 when it launches on its November 7 release date.

The Xbox One X boasts a 6 Teraflop GPU that is capable of native 4K gaming.

The console will be fully compatible with Xbox One games, and so far more than 130 games are going to get enhanced thanks to the Xbox One X’s power.

Xbox 360 games will also be backwards compatible on the Xbox One X and so too soon will original Xbox games.

The backwards compatibility the Xbox One X offers is well known, but now Microsoft have teased the possibility of forward compatibility.

Microsoft’s Albert Penello teased how the Redmond-based tech giant may tackle the typical console generational upgrades in an MCV UK interview.

He said: “We care a lot about compatibility, we have a huge effort around compatibility, and that’s not just backwards compatibility.

“I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that we care a lot about compatibility and in this day and age people have shifted to caring more about their community and their apps, than caring about the piece of hardware that they’re on, and we have just moved with that.”

Those planning to pick up an Xbox One X pre-order will surely be hoping this raises the possibility of the console playing games for a future Xbox.

If Microsoft went down that route it would be interesting to see how they could make games for a future Xbox run on the Xbox One X.

Especially since Sony have confirmed that they are releasing a PS5 to follow-up the success of the PS4 and PS4 Pro.

A successor to the Xbox One X will surely have to be on a similar power level to a PS5.

Would the Xbox One X be able to handle the specs needed for games running on a next-gen Xbox?

Xbox One X: Introducing the brand new console

It remains to be seen, but a Microsoft insider has already said that the tech giant are working on a successor to the Xbox One X.

In July rumours of another new Xbox console started to emerge.

The new reports suggest that Microsoft is designing an Xbox One X successor.

That's according to Windows Central's Jez Corden (via GamingBolt), an insider who previously outed the Xbox One X.

Corden told Twitter followers: "The next Xbox is already being designed."

But don't expect it too soon, because Corden believes it won't launch until at least 2020.

Interestingly, the Xbox One X follow-up allegedly won't be a next-gen device, but will instead be another hardware upgrade.

Asked why he left the word generation out of his tweet, Corden replied: "Ahah, well generations are over, at least for Xbox. Change resilient games are the standard."
