GoPro Hero6 Leak Reveals iPhone X Challenger

This article is more than 6 years old.

A photo of the long-awaited GoPro Hero6 Black has recently been leaked, showing the as yet unreleased action camera in full retail packaging and revealing its key specifications.

The reader-submitted photo published by Photo Rumors, shows the camera still in its box which bears the name ‘Hero6 Black’, marking it out as the successor to the current flagship, the “Hero5 Black”.

The packaging also reveals a few key specifications including a 12 Megapixel sensor and water resistance to a depth of 10m just like the Hero5 Black, but with the addition of 4K recording at 60 frames per second (fps), which is twice as fast as the previous model.

Video captured at 60 fps allows for high-quality half-speed slow-motion playback at 30 fps or for extra smooth playback at full speed on devices which support it. Both of these modes are especially welcome on a camera such as the GoPro which is designed specifically for capturing fast-paced action.

A 4K 60 fps recording mode was also recently added to the latest iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X handsets, so it’s certainly a good move for GoPro not to appear behind on specs.

A second leak reported by The Verge reveals that the GoPro Hero6 Black will also shoot 1080p video at up to 240 fps. This allows for powerful 10x slow motion effect when played back at a standard 24 fps.

According to information grabbed from GoPro’s staging site and tweeted by Konrad Iturbe (@konrad_it ). The new line-up will retain the Hero5 Black and Hero5 Session models, with the Hero6 Black joining as the new flagship alongside the company’s Fusion 360-degree offering.

The GoPro HERO6 Black is expected to launch on September 28th.
