How to check how much storage apps are taking up on iPhone or iPad

In this step-by-step tutorial, we’ll show you how to see the amount of on-device storage space iOS apps take on your iPhone or iPad.

iOS applications consist of both an actual application size and a separate size for documents and data. The app size is usually what you see under the Information section of that app’s App Store page. On the other hand, documents and data size is the amount of files these apps build up in the regular course of use.

You can easily see both these pieces of information in your iPhone and iPad settings.

How to check iOS app storage usage

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select iPhone/iPad Storage.
  4. You will see a list of apps and the amount of space they are occupying on the device. They are sorted by size, but you can tap the Size option and choose to sort by Name and Last Used Date.
  5. Tap one of the apps here to see its App Size and the Documents & Data size.

What else can you do here

This screen also shows the app icon, version number, developer’s name, and the option to offload the app or delete it.

If you choose to offload it, the app (App Size) will be deleted to free space on the device, but all the app files (Documents & Data) will continue to be saved on the device. When you reinstall this offloaded app by tapping the app icon on the Home Screen or App Library, your app will work as if it was never deleted.

The alternative to offloading is deleting, which will remove the actual app as well as its documents and data to free up all the space it occupies.

Some apps like Photos may also offer app recommendations here, while others, like Safari, Music, Messages, VLC, Infuse, Prime Video, and Podcasts, will present additional detailed information broken down across categories. Some of these apps also let you manage app data, like deleting site data or music files directly from this screen.

Note that you may also see app bundles on the iPhone Storage screen that show combined data for related apps of the same developer. For instance, if you use both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, you may see one bundle for them, which shows the Shared Size.

In a few rare cases, the app size may not show on this screen, in which case, you can view this information on the App Store page for that app.
