HP UK offers up to £500 to trade in your phone for its Elite x3 Windows 10 Mobile flagship

Last week, HP UK raised the price of its Elite x3 flagship phone by 7%, increasing its cost to £757.20 including the Desk Dock accessory that supports Windows 10 Mobile's PC-like Continuum experience. HP is now hoping to tempt more buyers to purchase the high-end handset - or to "trade up to the HP Elite x3", in the company's words - by offering them cashback when they trade in their current devices.

The exact amount of cashback you can expect to receive depends on the device that you trade in:

  • iPhone 7 or Galaxy S7 / S7 edge | £500

  • Any iPhone 6S or 6S Plus or Galaxy S6 Edge | £400

  • Any iPhone 6 or any Galaxy S6 | £300

  • Any iPhone 5 or Galaxy S5 | £200

  • Nokia Lumia 950 / 950 XL [sic] | £125

  • Any other Nokia Lumia or any other smartphone | £100

As you can see, the newest iPhones, along with Samsung's latest range-toppers, attract the highest cashback rate. However, Microsoft's Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL flagships, which are now a year and a half old, get one of the lowest rates at just £125. And even if you wish to trade in a premium device from another manufacturer - such as the Google Pixel, Sony Xperia XZ or HTC 10 - you'll get no more than £100. Bizarrely, that's the same amount you'd get for trading in an entry-level smartphone like the Lumia 435 or Wileyfox Spark, which cost less than £100 brand new.

As you would expect, various terms and conditions apply. For example, the device that you send in must be "working, complete and undamaged", although "reasonable wear and tear [will be] accepted". The device cannot be more than three years old, and only carrier-unlocked handsets will be accepted for trade-in.

Additionally, HP will not accept any handsets that were purchased from eBay or other auction sites, or from third-party resellers on major retail sites, such as Amazon Marketplace transactions. Only the Elite x3, or the Elite x3 and Desk Dock bundle, purchased from "a participating HP Authorised reseller" between March 6 and April 30, 2017, will qualify for the trade-in deal.
