Mute embedded video in Messages

Want to mute a video that is blasting noise within an embedded Message? You can do that with a nice subtle trick. This works to silence embedded video sound in both the iOS and Mac Messages apps, both of which allow you to play embedded videos in Messages conversations without launching into a web browser.

How to Mute an Embedded Video in Messages

The muting video trick works the same on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, of course you tap on an iOS device and click on a Mac, but otherwise everything is the same:

  1. Play an embedded video message in Messages as usual
  2. Look for and tap (or click) on the speaker sound icon to mute the video
  3. Mute the audio from embedded videos in messages

  4. Tap the speaker sound icon again to unmute the video
  5. Unmute audio in video messages embedded in messages

That’s all there is to it, simple and easy.

This is helpful if you want to watch a video without blasting the audio everywhere, but don’t want to mute the entire system sound from the iOS device or Mac for whatever reason.
