The MacBook Pro accessory deluge begins: LaCie announces ‘the world’s fastest desktop drives’

With the launch of the new MacBook Pro models with their USB-C-only ports, we can expect a flood of new accessories aimed at the new machines. LaCie is quickly out of the gate with some new Thunderbolt 3 drives, with sizes ranging from 2TB all the way up to 120TB!

Described as ‘the world’s fastest desktop storage solutions,’ the new products are firmly geared toward professional users, with prices that reflect this …

The range starts with the LaCie Bolt3 (above) offering 2TB of PCIe SSD – the same as the SSD drives fitted to the MacBook Pro machines themselves. That provide blistering speed which the company says makes it suitable for editing 6K video.

LaCie harnessed the breakthrough performance potential of Thunderbolt 3 and paired it with two M.2 PCIe SSDs striped into a 2TB volume. Bolt3 delivers record speeds of up to 2800MB/s and cuts valuable time off of post-production workflows, such as ingesting RAW footage from RED® or Blackmagic® cinema cameras or transcoding 4/5/6K footage using Adobe® Premiere® Pro or DaVinci Resolve. What’s more, videographers can transfer a terabyte of 4K ProRes 4444 XQ footage from the LaCie Bolt3 to RAID storage such as the LaCie 12big Thunderbolt 3 in only 5 minutes and 11 seconds.

You get dual Thunderbolt 3 ports for daisy chaining and powering your laptop while using the drive. As you might expect from the description, the Bolt3 isn’t cheap, coming in at a cool $1999.

The range maxes out with the 12gig, which claims to be the world’s largest as well as fastest desktop storage device, offering 2600MB/s speeds and up to 120TB of capacity. The range starts at 48TB for $6399.

LaCie hasn’t yet announced availability beyond saying ‘some time this quarter.’

If you need something with slightly more consumer-friendly pricing, the company already offers a rugged 1TB Thunderbolt SSD for $750.
