Netflix Not Participating In Apple's New TV Guide

A body blow against Apple?

At today’s “Hello Again” event, Apple is expected to introduce a new TV Guide-like app for Apple TV. Unfortunately, the biggest name in video streaming won’t be a part of it, according to Recode.

Recode explains that Netflix won’t be a partner for Apple’s new Apple TV app:

Netflix’s refusal to participate will be a blow to the launch of the guide. Netflix has worked with Apple in the past as a Siri voice search partner for Apple TV. But Netflix is also a content producer and could be skeptical of Apple’s plans. The guide concept makes it simpler for users to find Netflix content, but it would also give Apple more power over what shows get promoted.

First leaked earlier this week, Apple’s new TV discovery app should make an appearance at today’s “Hello Event,” which begins at 10 a.m. PDT. There’s no word on when the app would be released to the public.

Called “The Watch List” internally, the ap will recommend TV shows based on the content available to them. As an example, if you subscribe to HBO, you might get a recommendation to watch “Westworld,” a new science fiction show from the network.

As USA Today noted at the time:

For network programmers, it provides a central hub for promoting new shows — a helpful tool at a time when old programming tricks for launching a new series, such as wedging a freshman show next to a hit program, don’t work in the digital world.

Apple’s event begins at 10 a.m. PDT today, Oct. 27.
