Backups are useless if you (a) don't make them, or (b) don't know how to recover them, or (c) aren't backing up everything you thought you were. And I'm not talking using the 'verify' option in the backup software. I mean, testing the backups by performing restores. I'm far from a system admin type of person, but in our company, we have none, so i do the little things just to keep things running. But I verify the backup logs once a week to make sure the backups are running. And once a month, I perform a restore of a subset of the data, usually different from the last month.
