"I'll need to keep my iTunes library on an external drive; can I run iTunes and listen to music through iTunes Match even if the library is unavailable? No, you won't need to keep the Library on an external drive. You'll need to keep the *music* (or the bulk of it) on an external drive. There's a big difference. The Library is just a *list* of the music; that list can be anywhere, but it needs to be present when iTunes runs. That is not true, however, of the *music*; no law says that your music has to live inside the Music folder on your internal drive, or that it needs to be present at all times. So just uncheck 'Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library' and put the music on the external drive. My music has lived on an external drive for many years; that drive might or might be present when iTunes runs; no problem." MacInTouch 10:12 AM
