I think 1920x1200 (HiDPI) means it's rendered at 3840x2400, and then down-sampled to draw on the native 2880x1800 display. That would certainly cause a lot of memory and GPU use, hence the fan activity, especially depending on what filtering algorithm was used. 1920x1200 would be up-sampled to 2880x1800, so less memory, but may look a bit more fuzzy, as not a clean 4:1 or 2:1 sampling.
