Thursday Highlights: Steve Jobs had a Reality Distortion Field (Wikipedia reference), but Apple has grown to such a size it generates it's own gravity, and Farhad Manjoo sees the company strengthening the "pull of its orbit with each device"; with Tim Cook's visit to China, the CEO not only addresses iCloud security, but announces company will open 25 new stores, as country "will become Apple's biggest revenue contributor"—more in our Apple/Macintosh section; Apple offering 6 free months of iCloud to those who were prematurely downgraded; Apple ends SSL 3.0 push notifications following POODLE vulnerability security flaw; Amsys explains setup of Handoff feature in order to make/receive calls between your Apple devices; Tuts+ shows way you can transfer Time Machine backups to another drive; Dock and General preferences in Yosemite covered by eXtensions; Digitimes Research reporting that Apple will "sacrifice its gross margins to save its tablet business"; fix on the way for double-charge errors on some Apple Pay cards; Christian Bale is going to portray Steve Jobs in Aaron Sorkin's biopic on the iConic co-founder; Wired reviews the new 5K iMac, says it is "nearly flawless; buy it now"; Pixelmator for iPad reviewed at MacStories, 9to5Mac, AppleInsider; Chris Maxcer thinks "Apple is confusing tablet leadership with awesomeness" saying "Just because a kid chooses to buy the least burnt cookie at a school bake sale, that doesn't mean the least burnt cookie is insanely great."

It sure doesn't feel trivial...' I made a Snow Leopard VM with VirtualBox when Lion first came out: I think maybe VB 4.1.10 or thereabouts. I remember that I couldn't boot the installer directly but had to format the VM disk as HFS+ first, as a separate act, then boot the installer and install the OS. I don't remember the specifics of how I did it, though. The [VirtualBox] docs made no distinction between SL and SL Server at that point, but I did notice that the 4.1.14 docs now do. My VM still works with 4.1.14, but they may have modified it not to allow building a new one. If you can get the disk formatted and still can't boot the installer you may have to look for an older version of VB." MacInTouch 4:08 PM
